Why Running is Capable of Lifting Your Mood

Why Running is Capable of Lifting Your Mood

If you were to ask a runner why they run, you might be surprised how many of them tell you that the act of running makes them happy and improves their life. It might sound crazy to someone who isn’t in the habit of running, but there is plenty of evidence that every word is true.

Release of Endorphins

Any physical exercise, such as running, helps release endorphins in your brain. Endorphins are a happy chemical that makes you energised, more alert, and even happier. During a run or other workout, these endorphins can kick in and change your mood. Long-time runners will also tell you that going without a run can make them grumpier.

Able to Handle Challenges

When you run, you also improve your physical shape. This can help you feel stronger and better equipped to handle any of the challenges that come your way. Being in shape offers physical changes, but it can also help your mental state. You may feel empowered and happier as a result of it.

Change to Work Toward a Goal

Running, especially racing, lets you set goals. People who are working toward a goal are happier, even if they don’t end up achieving it. Setting a goal and working toward it can trigger happy feelings. Reaching the goal also feels great, but the journey toward it can offer happiness.

Improved Self-Esteem

Running also helps with your self-esteem. Getting in shape, working towards goals, and having increase endorphins work together to improve your self-esteem. Having better self-esteem also makes you happier. It’s a win-win situation with all the factors that can improve your mood.

Exercise, especially running, can make you feel better about yourself in many different ways. Even short runs regularly can offer an emotional boost you may not get otherwise. Give it a shot and see if it helps you, too!
